NYC Pod Hotel
Designed in the Comprehensive Studio level of IIT Graduate School, this project thoroughly explores methods of precast and prefabricated architecture to propose an innovative solution for an emerging building type located at a major transitional intersection in Manhattan. Whether a traveler is coming into the city for tourism or business, chances are they won’t be spending much time in their hotel room. With that as the basic tenet of the typology, use of space is maximized by prefabricating pod rooms off-site and craning them into a custom precast concrete armature. Three sizes of rooms, sliding past each other in the superstructure, create a highly textured façade.
Chelsea is to the south, Midtown is to the north and Penn station is across the street. To create a transition across this massive scale shift, much of the hotel amenity program has been distributed vertically through a series of atria rising up through the hotel tower on the north edge of the 140’x100’ lot. A two story bakery and banquet space sits comfortably adjacent to the existing low rise neighbors on Eighth Ave.
