High Speed Rail Station
The introduction of High Speed Rail into central Illinois will create beneficial connections for the local population. Located in downstate Illinois somewhere between Chicago and St Louis sit the twin cities of Bloomington and Normal. The region is defined by several intersecting and overlapping networks. The train station being built connects these local networks with Chicago and beyond via High Speed Rail. The station is located at the nexus of Illinois State University, a local conference center, a 30+ mile off-street bicycle trail network, Normal’s City Hall and Police Station, and will also serve as an intra-regional bus hub.
With all of these networks occurring at the site, a strategy to increase connections and interactions between these constituencies is deployed. This takes the form of a site that stretches the entire 1000’ length of the train platform. Pedestrian paths are created through, over and around the site, retail and dining in the station invites members of the local community in regardless of the train, and the location next to Normal’s rapidly revitalizing entertainment district reinforce the HSR Station’s regional draw.
