Chicago Bus Rapid Transit System Station Design
Heavy storms also
often cause Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs), when
rain water combined with sewer water overflows the
system’s capacity, discharging untreated waste water into
Lake Michigan and the Chicago River, often resulting in
closed beaches and sick Chicagoans. The footprint
(and roofprint) of BRT infrastructure will be spread across
the city. With this Catchment design, each station’s
canopy funnels rainwater into a cistern within the platform.
Diverted from the Chicago Area Waterway System’s
combined sewer system, the harvested water, instead,
can go to productive use by the city and it’s citizens.
